When I looked at Is this a concurrency? I found someone that has done some work and was wondering if his "discovery" has merit. The responses and discussion was really of value for people interested in math, and particularly the young one - a great example where "measurements" are not "proof".

Why was this voted as off topic?

$\begingroup$ Off topic is sort of a "catch'em all" title. There is a more detailed explanation. The question was deemed as one with insufficient context. Perhaps motivation or relevant definitions. Perhaps it was lacking some signs of efforts from the OP. $\endgroup$ – Asaf Karagila Jul 28 at 15:57

$\begingroup$ The guy made a great effort to explain his "discovery" (including a diagram). He asked a very relevant and insightful question and the two responses he got were GREAT!!! I would say discard this type of question (I am not sure @Asaf that you looked into it) is a CHUTZPA and short sighted. All the guys "holding" were disrespectful by not telling the asking guy where he failed and what is not GOOD in the question. I would encourage these types of discovery and questions to help us all to understand what is math observation and proof! $\endgroup$ – Moti Jul 28 at 18:07

$\begingroup$ It reads like a homework question. There is no explanation where it comes from, nor why it should interest anyone to answer it. I don't understand what you mean by "great effort" but, in fairness, I don't understand your multiple exclamation marks and captialised words -- your comment reads like hyperbole. $\endgroup$ – postmortes Jul 28 at 20:18

$\begingroup$ The "effort" and "discovery" @Moti mentioned may probably refer to what OP said in two comments under his/her post: "I was exploring this configuration with Geogebra and came to this. And no, they are not perpendicular." "According to my calculation they are not. But Geogebra gives an accuracy of 14 decimal places, so I am not sure whether I make a mistake or not. I hope to be wrong!" $\endgroup$ – Jack Jul 28 at 22:13

$\begingroup$ @Asaf It is frustrating the ease with which questions are placed on hold and not evaluated on there value to discussion - so what if it is homework? Someone "less" expert than you placed a question - provided diagram, explained his wondering - what is bad about it? I am not dramatic - I furious with the supposedly superiority... $\endgroup$ – Moti Jul 30 at 5:21

$\begingroup$ @Moti: And try to see this from the other side, how frustrating it is to see this site loses all integrity, as people dump question after question, without any context or explanation, and then expect answers that fits their knowledge, or worse. And that a handful of people is actually trying to do something about it is nothing short of incredible. Instead of seeing them as feeling superior, join them, and help them make sure that questions like this one won't get caught in the filter. $\endgroup$ – Asaf Karagila Jul 30 at 5:49

$\begingroup$ @Asaf Is this the case of someone that is just trying to make easy for himself? As someone that is interested in mathematics it was really nice to see someone that plays with diagrams and makes an observation and share it with us - he made an effort and does not have enough experience to see the way "out". It is also a case that teaches that "close enough" is not "enough". My complaint is that category it placed in and not responding to the guy why the voted him down. I just wonder what you personally feel about the question? $\endgroup$ – Moti Jul 30 at 21:15

$\begingroup$ Moti, I haven't really read the question. And my personal opinion is entirely irrelevant. I am telling you, as a moderator, and as an experienced user. It's good to have oversight from all sides. People who answer too many low-quality questions, people who close too many of them. We try to do that, yes. There's also a notion of "false positive", and there's no need to freak out. Maybe you're not freaking out, but you're acting a bit like you do. Calm down. $\endgroup$ – Asaf Karagila Jul 30 at 21:46
  • $\begingroup$ Well, I would suggest you look at the question and than may be you will agree with me that those guys were - "מהירים על ההדק":) $\endgroup$ – Moti Jul 31 at 6:59
