I am on Windows XP running Chrome and IE 7. Both of them render this type of $\LaTeX$. Is there anything that I can do to fix it?

The problem is that equations in-line do not show, but paragraph equations show just fine.

\begin...\endand turns them into display math, so if the in-line delimiters don't include dollars, MathJax will find those tags within them and make them displays. $\endgroup$
