[Some time ago](http://chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/3740/2016/7/4) the tag [tag:maxima-minima] has been created, since then it grew 152 questions.

However, a few years ago we had we had this discussion: https://math.meta.stackexchange.com/questions/9128/how-do-we-tag-questions-on-maximizing-minimizing-functions The result was that we should use [tag:optimization]. As a result, several tags about maxima and minima already are [synonyms of optimization](https://math.stackexchange.com/tags/optimization/synonyms); namely [tag:max-min], [tag:extrema], [tag:maximization] and [tag:minimization].

I do not see any reason why [tag:maxima-minima] should be treated differently than the remaining tags mentioned above. Which is why I suggested a synonym relatively soon after the tag was created. Since 5 months passed and the tags are still not synonyms, I decided to mention this on meta. (Either this will help to get the votes needed [to approve the synonym](https://math.stackexchange.com/tags/optimization/synonyms). Or if there are now some reasons why the two tags should be kept separate, we have here place where to discuss it.)
