Question lists are cached by SE servers. This means, the scripts fetching posts from the database don't actually talk to the database every time you hit refresh or navigate between pages. They wait until 1-2 minutes pass since their last sync, depending on the page (time intervals stated here). Digging into the database every time someone opens a SE page ...

The answer below describes the frontpage for non-logged in users as it was from mid-April to late June 2013. The current state of the page is different: it is similar, though not identical, to the active question list shown to logged in users (see below). It seems that the SE team realized and corrected their mistake. What do they see? Almost the same list ...

I came up with a user script fix for this problem. Basically, what it does is turn off display math entirely in the questions list, rendering it inline instead. For the curious, here's the code: MathJax.Hub.Register.StartupHook( "End Config", function () { var conf = MathJax.Hub.config.tex2jax; conf.inlineMath = conf.inlineMath.concat( conf....

Here is what was posted on meta on Mathoverflow.net, which is transitioning to the Stackexchange network, emphasis is mine: Stack exchange PM here. A few words about the homepage. First, the only changes we have made are to the anonymous homepage. If you are an actual registered user who is logged in, you will never see the changes that we've ...

It may seem like a bug, but I've seen that post on main page when you modified it, This may have happened because that question was tagged with one of the tags you've included in ignore list and preferred to hide out ignored tags, This might also could happen due to another reason but at least in this case your ignored-tags was the only reason. Update: When ...

On 2 March 2017 the default front page changed from the "active" ordering to the "interesting" ordering. The goal of this is to show users a list of questions that are more likely to be interesting to them, based on their preferences and usage history. Part of this change is the removal of the "questions with new activity" notification from the front page, ...

In this case, there was an answer posted earlier today, and shortly after deleted by the author. For users below 10k reputation, such activities are invisible, but users with at least 10k can see it. Generally, sometimes inactive questions are bumped by the community bot, which also can bring actually inactive questions to the front page or the "active" tab....

The thumbnail is generated by cropping part of your question. Since the $\rm\LaTeX$ is not fully within that cropped part, the code does not compile. One could argue in favor of changing the code of the excerpt generator to always complete the $\rm\LaTeX$ code if the crop happens halfway through it, but this opens up a few different problems. For example ...

This still occurs 2 1/2 years later. Either it wasn't fixed or the bug has resurfaced. Example question: Inequality involving gradients and Hessian - date December 5, 2017. [Note: This is not intended to be a "comment answer" but a means to attach an image example of the problem, which due to the way this site's software is designed can not be uploaded to ...

The comment by the OP indicates that the problem has been solved, I am posted an answer anyway, so that the question does not remain unanswered. I can think of two reasons for not seeing question on the frontpage after it was answered: This might be caused by caching, if you check the front page immediately after bumping the question. In this case checking ...
