Accelerator (方通行アクセラレータ: Ippō Tsūkō (Akuserarēta), lit. "One-Way Road") is the anti-hero in the A Certain Magical Index (Toaru Majutsu no Index) series. He is the 1st-ranked Level 5 and the strongest esper currently residing in Academy City.

Superpower

Accelerator's ability is Vector Transformation (ベクトル変換 | Bekutoru Henkan). It allows him to control vectors — any objects with a magnitude and direction. Some examples include, but not limited to, are killing viruses, hacking computers, reflecting sound, deflecting bullets, and stopping Earth's rotation. It is always passive and active, making him almost invincible. Accelerator normally applies this ability for defensive and offensive purposes, though its applications are limitless. Because of his massive intellect and calculating prowess, he can quickly understand and apply unknown/strange laws (e.g. dark matter) through science and math.

Appearance/Personality

Accelerator is a skinny teenager who has pale skin, moppy white hair, and red eyes. This is caused by his ability, as it blocks ultraviolet rays, thereby preventing his body from producing melanin. It reduces outside influence so much that it causes hormonal imbalance, giving him an androgynous appearance. Regardless, he identifies as male.

He is lazy and shows indifference to people and most circumstances. He has a vulgar and threatening way of speaking with rage, but he is also capable of showing himself to be moderate and rational under serious situations. But when he is enraged or excited when fighting a strong or amusing opponent, he bears wide grin and laughs, showing a maniacal and sadistic persona.

Trivia

1. Accelerator once had a "normal name" which nobody will ever know since he himself forgot it. The novels state his last name consists of two kanji and his first name three, yet his name had no real meaning.
2. Tree Diagram predicted in a fight between him and Misaka Mikoto, she would die in 185 moves. But this is likely inaccurate because he likes toying with his enemies.
