Henning Makholm

I'm a computer scientist by training (Ph.D. in programming language technology, 2003), currently working in industry. Real mathematics is more of a hobby.

In general, don't assume I necessarily know what I'm talking about, unless it's about computer science or formal logic. I dabble in various other fields that I've never taken courses in, mostly just by extrapolating from Wikipedia.

PSA: Addressing someone as "sir" in conversation means one of four things:

  1. The person you are speaking to has been knighted.

  2. You don't know the person's name but need to attract their attention and want to sound more deferrent than "hey, you!"

  3. You know that the person you are speaking to is an overbearing bully who demands random displays of inane obsequiousness from you, and will cause harm to you unless you comply.

  4. You're accusing the person you are speaking to of being such an overbearing bully.

Using the fourth of these meanings towards me is a reliable way to destroy my will to deal with you any further. If you're expecting random strangers on the internet to spend their time helping you for free, at least have the common courtesy to speak to them like equals.
